When walking on the beach or in the forest we tend to mindlessly pick up a stone or shell and take it with us. We appreciate it, it’s beautiful, and it reminds us of the nice time we had. But we usually don’t think about where it came from, how it got there, and least of all about the empty space it leaves.

To us it’s so normal to pick up a stone, but why do we feel so free to take it? This feeling of being allowed to take anything from nature interests me. It shows in one of the most gentle and innocent ways how human beings feel elevated above the natural world.

After having collected many stones, pieces of wood, feathers etc in my time, a few months ago, for the first time, I looked at the spot from where I took a little white stone. I could see the little dent it had left in the dry moss on the side of the road. It was the first time I realised that by bringing it with me I had taken something from this place. With I Took It I want to focus on this experience.
